Central Elementary School to hold Sweetheart Dance on Feb. 5

January 21, 2010

“When I think about the Sweetheart Dance, I think it is a good thing to have because we have to do something at school other than learn,” said Tim from Mrs. Owens’s 5th grade class at Central Elementary School. “We have to enjoy ourselves.”

The Sweetheart Dance, an annual Valentine’s dance is put on by Central School District #104 in order to bring families together for dancing, refreshments and fun. “Even though it’s just for a few hours on a Friday night, this dance really gives parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and of course the children a purpose to take time out of their busy schedule and do what’s most important,” said Toni Wobbe, coordinator of the Sweetheart Dance.

The Dance started three years ago after Wobbe thought a family tradition should be started in the district. “Years ago, when I attended Central School, we used to have father-daughter dances,” explained Wobbe. “I thought it would be fun to bring something like that back to the school, so I talked with second grade teacher Bev Jones, and with her help, we were able to start a new tradition here at Central School.”

The Sweetheart Dance allows all family members – siblings, parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents – to come to the school and enjoy time together as a family and as a school community. Last year over 350 people attended the dance, and this year’s dance is expected to be the biggest and best yet. Wobbe said the dance also gives families in the district a chance to meet and mingle.

“The kids really enjoy coming to dance with their families and teachers,” said Wobbe. “For some of them, it’s the first time they’ve seen parents and grandparents even dance, so it’s fun and I’m really proud of this event.”

Fifth grade student Adrianna agreed saying, “I’m really looking forward to the dance, taking pictures and doing whatever some people might call dancing. It will be fun!”

This year, the dance will be held Friday, February 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 in the Central School gymnasium. DJ Magic Mike will provide music. New to the Sweetheart Dance this year is a photo booth available with paid admission. Students and family members will get to take as many pictures as they want, print them out and take them home with them that night! Tickets are available at the door, and doors will open at 6:20. It is $5 for students Pre-K - 5th grade and $1 per adult. There will also be attendance prizes, so be sure to come out this year for the Sweetheart Dance!

Please note: this is a child/guardian dance. Adults must stay with their children while at the dance.
